Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is used to treat telangiectasia (or “spider veins”), a common aesthetic problem usually appearing in women between the ages of 30-60, although younger women and men can also develop spider veins. Spider veins are small, thin clusters of red or purple veins situated near the skin surface. In some cases, aching, swelling and burning may be experienced. Injections with a mild sclerosing solution are used to collapse and fade spider veins. This procedure is conveniently done in the doctor’s office.

Procedure Benefits

  • Lightening/fading of spider veins
  • Smoother look to legs
  • Possible reduction of leg discomfort

Private Consultation

Your surgeon, at our conveniently located Cincinnati offices, will examine the troubling areas of your legs and determine whether you are a good candidate for sclerotherapy. You should be prepared to discuss your complete medical history, including previous surgery, and any medications you are taking (including vitamins). You will also discuss the cost of the procedure, keeping in mind that this is usually an elective procedure which is not covered by most insurance companies. Women who are pregnant or nursing are advised to postpone treatment. If you have problems with circulation, diabetes or your heart, you may be advised against treatment.

Preparation

You should avoid extreme sun exposure before the procedure, and you should not apply any sort of lotion to your legs on the day of treatment. You should not take aspirin or Motrin for at least 2 weeks prior to the procedure. Your surgeon may instruct you to purchase support hose to bring on the day of your procedure. You should wear shorts on the day of treatment, and bring a pair of slacks to wear over the support hose following the procedure.

Procedure Overview

The area to be treated will be cleansed with an antiseptic solution. Your surgeon will hold the affected skin taut and inject the sclerosing solution into the spider veins. Cotton balls and compression tape are placed on each area after injection. You may be asked to change positions several times during the process. Several injections per area are typically needed. You may feel a slight burning sensation and feel a mild pricking as the injections are administered. The treatment usually takes no longer than 15-30 minutes. Additional treatment sessions are done about 3 months apart.

Recovery and Healing Time

Immediately after your procedure you will wear support hose to help guard against blood clots and to promote healing. The tape and cotton balls can be removed after 48 hours, and the support hose will be worn for 2 weeks of compression. You may experience temporary cramping in the legs for the first day or two, but this is usually mild and does not require medication. You should avoid prolonged sitting, standing and certain sports as advised by your surgeon, but you should begin walking right away to reduce swelling and avoid clotting in your legs. Your treated veins may at first look worse than before the treatment, but their appearance and the bruising and redness at the injection sites will improve over several weeks. There may be some brownish pigmentation which could take up to a year to completely fade. Multiple treatments are usually done for the best result.

Procedure Risks

  • Allergic reaction
  • Small blood clots in veins
  • Scarring
